THE IMPROVEMENT OF ENGLISH CLAUSE SKILLS THROUGH THE COOPERATIVE WRITING STRATEGY

ABSTRACT

 

This research is based on the low achievement of the students in mastering English grammar, especially Clause. In order to solve the problem, the researcher conducted a Classroom Action Research by applying the Cooperative Writing strategy in teaching Cause and Effect Clause. The problems of this study are 1). Can Cooperative Writing application improve the students’ ability in mastering English Clause? and 2). Can the Cooperative Writing application increase the students’ activities during the learning process? This study is a Classroom Action Research which consists of two cycles and each cycle includes Planning, Acting, Observing, Reflection, and Revision. The subject of the study was the students of XII-MIPA2 of SMA Negeri 8 Banda Aceh. The data of this research were collected by giving a speaking test, and by using the observation sheet. The data of this research were collected by giving a test, and by using the observation sheet. The data were analyzed using a simple statistical percentage formula. The result of the data analysis shows that the students’ achievement in the mastering English Clause increase from cycle I to cycle II. In cycle I, 47% of the students reach the indicator, while in cycle II 83.33% reach the indicator. So, it can be concluded that the application of a Cooperative Writing strategy can improve the students’ mastery. As the follow up for this research, it is suggested that English teachers should apply the Cooperative Writing strategy in teaching Clause.
