THE EFFECT OF GENDER AND SELF ESTEEM ON SPEAKING SKILL STUDENTS OF FEB MANAGEMENT STUDY PROGRAM, UNIKI

Abstract


ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the effect of gender and self-esteem on speaking skills. This research conducted at Universitas Islam Kebangsaan Indonesia (UNIKI) Bireuen. The research subjects were 20 students of the management program from the Faculty of Economics and Business who took English courses, they were Manajemen Regular A. The researchers used mixed method research which aims to describe complex phenomena from the results of collecting and analyzing the data. The results of the study showed that (1) gender was very influential on students’ speaking ability. These results are proven by the average score on performance test obtained by the female student group which is higher than the average score obtained by male students, (2) self-esteem affected the speaking ability of the students, which can be seen from the average value of the performance test of students who have a high level of self-esteem higher than those who have a low level of self-esteem, (3) gender and self-esteem had a significant effect on students’ speaking ability.
